He was born in Tokat in 1964, and completed his high school education in Ankara. He was an active choir member during high school years, studying with Taner Solukçu and Fatma Bildiren. In 1987, he graduated from the Music Education Department of Gazi University in Ankara. From 1984-1987 he was a member of the Ankara Radio Youth Choir and between 1983-1987 he sang in the choirs of Suna Çevik, Gülşen Şimşek, Feruzan Esmergül and Mustafa Apaydın. He began working as a music teacher at Ankara Arı College in 1991, and worked at Manisa Akhisar College from 1996-2001. Here he established the Childrens Choirs of Akhisar Education Foundation and also the Akhisar Municipality, giving numerous concerts. In 2001he was appointed as a music teacher by the Ministry of Education and he worked in various schools in Akhisar, Salihli, Bergama and İzmir. In 2003, he established the İzmir Karşıyaka District National Education Childrens Choir. In 2005 he was appointed as Choir Director at İzmir Işılay Saygın Fine Arts School, where he established the school choir, giving numerous concerts and participating in international festivals and competitions. In 2010, he attended Wim van Herk’s Choir Workshop and also Prof. Volker Hempfling / Sabine Horstmann’s Choral Conducting Workshop in 2012. In 2014, he was awarded the Silver Diploma at the International Choir Festival in Italy. In 2014 and 2015 Akyunak conducted Fazıl Say’s Nazım Oratorio in two concerts in İzmir and Bonn, Germany, under a collaborative project between his choir Parafonia and Bonn Aloisiuskolleg Youth Orchestra. Between 2009 and 2014 he taught Chorus and Choral Conducting classes at Dokuz Eylül University Buca Education Faculty Music Education Department. In 2014-2015 he was choral director at Dokuz Eylül University State Conservatoire. In June 2015 Akyunak organized the 1st Izmir Polyphonic Choirs Festival together with the Mozart Association in Izmir, where he was also a jury member. He continues to work as choral director and choral singing instructor at Yaşar University Music Department and İzmir Işılay Saygın Fine Arts School.
